The easiest way to add references where the cursor is located, is to use the "+" symbol on the left of the chapter content you are editing.
Then choose the type of reference you'd like to add: abbreviation, definition, internal, external or variable from the selection box.
Then start typing the document name and chose from the suggestions as soon as the desired appears. This might require you to enter more characters to get the needed suggestion.
External references are always starting with the document and optionally followed by the chapter, e.g. [ref-OM-A] or [ref:OM-A 1.2.3.]
Internal references are directly starting with the chapter number, but will appear with the document name nonethelessfollowed by the chapter, e.g. [see:OMM 2.]
